The Scottish Dark Sky Observatory relies on the fantastic support provided by our team of volunteers, who help to support the Observatory Manager and Resident Astronomer with events at the observatory and assist with various aspects of running the facility.
Most of our volunteers are from all walks of life but who each have a keen interest in astronomy and space, or with science, technology and engineering. They all carry out a great service to the observatory and our visitors while also working their regular jobs.
However we are always interested in involving more people to help out as volunteers. If you have an interest or experience with astronomy, or have skills which you feel could benefit the observatory, and you are willing to offer your time then you are most welcome at the SDSO.
Science communication – helping to give telescope tours at the observatory, talking about the telescopes and astronomy, taking part in observatory sessions.
Observatory maintenance – any practical skills involved with keeping the observatory building, appliances and telescopes in working order – especially qualified electricians, as well as plumbers, engineers etc.
Fundraising – looking for sources of funding and applying for them, seeking marketing opportunities, creating awareness of the observatory.
If you are willing to help out, please contact us via our email address, or visit the observatory yourself.
